The toothbrush & environmental sustainability

No. At the moment plant-based bristle technology is limited, and very expensive. The other option is to use pig hair instead of plastic – but we like animals so we’ve decided to use BPA-free nylon instead. If this bothers you, don’t worry, it bothers us too. We want to make a toothbrush which is 100% biodegradable and we’re working on it.

Yes, of course. Our toothbrushes are dentist-approved and manufactured by a reputable toothbrush specialist. We take your dental health as seriously as environmental health.

Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every 2-3 months to maintain proper oral hygiene. It may seem excessive, but an old toothbrush becomes home to lots of bacteria. Frayed bristles are also less effective at cleaning your teeth. This is why you can choose to have your new Bristle toothbrush delivered every 1, 2 or 3 months.

Once your new bamboo toothbrush subscription arrives, you will want to dispose of your old bamboo toothbrush. Simply pull out the bristles with a pair of pliers and dispose of them responsibly in your normal household waste. Then you can pop the wooden toothbrush handle into your compost or garden waste, or even better, reuse it – it’s still a perfectly good piece of high grade bamboo!

Bamboo is strong, versatile, naturally antibacterial and resistent to mould and mildew. It is a key element in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It grows to full height very quickly and can be harvested easily with relatively little effort compared with normal timbers. Bamboo is well known for its eco-friendly applications.

Yes! Our bamboo is sustainable and FSC certified. Moso bamboo requires very few pesticides, or heavy machinery to harvest.

What about the pandas, we hear you ask? Our toothbrush is made from Moso bamboo – a common manufacturing resource used for building materials and clothing. Pandas rely on Pseudosasa japonica (arrow bamboo), although they have been known to also eat Phyllostachys nigra (black bamboo) and Phyllostachys bissetii (bissetii bamboo). So, no pandas were harmed in the making of your Bristle toothbrush.

Biodegradable dental floss & sustainability

Our vegan-friendly dental floss is made from a combination of bamboo charcoal and a biodegradable polymer. Our floss breaks down much quicker than regular plastic floss, but will still produce some small micro particles. Unfortunately, our floss is not yet 100% plant-based, this is something we are working on. Our floss offers a good compromise, reducing plastic of normal floss, while still working to a very high standard. We are currently testing other natural alternatives – watch this space!

Compared to standard market alternatives, yes. When packaging is taken into account, our floss contains significantly less plastic than regular brands. We will soon move forward to remove that last little bit.

Yes of course – all of our packaging is plastic free and 100% recyclable. Our biodegradable dental floss comes in a little glass container within a small box. You can re-use it, or recycle in the same manner as you would a jar.

Please throw your dental floss in the household waste bin in short strands to avoid tangles.

How long is a piece of string? Well, this piece of string is 30m in length. We estimate that our little bundle of biodegradable floss will last you around 2 months if you floss everyday. Of course this depends how much you use. Everyone is different!

Yes – all our products are cruelty free and contain no animal products.

Absolutely! Our floss is awesome (and we know because we’ve tried a lot). Our floss is smooth but tough, giving you a satisfying clean between your teeth. Feeling is believing… give it a whirl and you’ll see what we mean.

Toothpaste tablets & sustainability

Well… the list of positives is rather long:
1. They are dry and are manufactured dry: this means they use no water during the manufacturing process, which in turn means their composition requires far fewer chemical preservatives. Reduced water consumption is also a major plus for the environment.

2. The dry composition of Bristle tabs results in a significantly reduced weight. This results in a reduced carbon footprint when transported.

3. The dry composition of the tablets means that we can package them in whatever we please! No more “impossible to recycle” toothpaste tubes. We deliver our toothpaste tabs in a simple, recycable sleeve.

Yes. As always. Our toothpaste tabs come in a pouch made of paper which is lined with a plant-based PLA film (so that we can keep your toothpaste tabs safe during delivery). The pouches are 100% certified compostable and FDA approved for direct contact with food.

Microcrystalline Cellulose – to gently and effectively polish your teeth.
Sodium Bicarbonate – combines with citric acid to create correct pH level.
Citric Acid – responsible for correct pH level.
Silica – helps with cleaning and polishing, and stabilises the tablet.
Sodium Laurel Glutamate – (soap) acts to tie the protein to the water.
Magnesium Stearate – a plant-based helper we need during the pressing of the tablets.
Natural Mint Aroma – responsible for fresh and cool breath.
Menthol – responsible for fresh and cool breath.
Stevia (Stevioside) – covers the slightly bitter taste of the silica.
Eugenol – a natural part of the mint aroma.
Sodium Fluoride – supports the re-mineralisation of your enamel (this is optional)

Absolutely. Our toothpaste tabs are very effective and just as good (if not better) than regular toothpaste. We have teamed up with Denttabs, a reputable manufacture of toothpaste tablets from Germany.

Our packs of 120 tabs should last two months, brushing twice a day.

We send out Bristle toothpaste tabs in very minimal packaging to reduce the environmental footprint. We encourage you to reuse a clean, dry container, such as a jar or tin, to store your Bristle toothpaste tabs in the bathroom.

Easy, just pop one in your mouth, add some water, chew for a few seconds until it’s all foamed up and you’re ready to brush!
